    What Are Stainless Steel Sinks?

Stainless steel is a metal alloy made of steel derived from iron and chromium. While stainless steel can include other elements such as nickel and carbon, it must contain at least 10.5% chromium to be considered true stainless steel. Chromium gives the metal its stainless properties and increases its resistance to corrosion.

Here are some things to look for in commercial and residential stainless steel sinks:

    • Luster: If the sink is shiny, chances are it has a high nickel content. The more nickel, the more your sink can withstand daily use.
    • Thickness: The quality of your stainless steel sink depends on its thickness, also called gauge. Smaller gauge numbers, such as 16 or 18, indicate thicker stainless steel.
    • Series: Series numbers designate the elemental makeup of your stainless steel sink material. Those in the 300 series have higher levels of chromium and nickel, making them more durable and desirable. However, other series have functional qualities as well.
    • Finish: Stainless steel sinks come in a variety of finishes based on your personal preference, including mirror, brushed, matte, satin and textured.

Which Countertops Should Use Stainless Steel Sinks?

With its sleek, shiny surface, stainless steel has a distinctive yet neutral look. This type of sink is most commonly associated with industrial styles, often used in kitchens focused more on functionality than design. However, stainless steel kitchen sinks also blend seamlessly with modern or contemporary inspired countertops that call for simple yet stylish details. This could include concrete, stark black marble, white quartz or even matching stainless steel countertops.

Stainless steel has a versatility that extends beyond contemporary or modern style aesthetics. Because of its neutral metal coloring, stainless steel complements almost any type of countertop. Even more traditional materials such as wood butcher block and granite will look great with stainless steel.
